As society has stayed focused on the traditional gender roles it has brought on an ongoing struggle for women to be accepted in the male dominated and masculine institution of sports. Due to the increasing participation of girls and women in sports I will discuss how these gender roles have influenced the social structure of sport. The deep-rootedness of gender ideology means that everyone makes decisions based on it, from children, teenagers, parents to people in power. Gender ideology plays a big role in how sport has been carried out throughout the ages.
Since the 1970s, gender has become an important category of analysis in the sociology of sport. Research has clearly demonstrated that sports are gendered activities as well as social contexts in which boys and men are more actively and enthusiastically encouraged to participate, compared with girls and women. “Sport equips you as a woman to get to the highest level of business or leadership,” said the Global Vice-Chair of Public Policy at EY and Founder of the EY Women Athletes Business Network, Beth Brooke-Marciniak.
