At the time Ligeti wrote it, he was interested in concepts of space and distance—his next work after the Lux aeterna was called Lontano—and at the top of the score of the Lux aeterna appears the general instruction ‘as if from afar’. Ligeti beschreibt «Athmosphères» und «Lux Aeterna» ähnlich: Als Musik, die keine Ereignisse schafft, sondern Zustände; die keine Konturen und Gestalten erzeugt, sondern nur einen Watch the video for Lux Aeterna from György Ligeti's 2001: A Space Odyssey for free, and see the artwork, lyrics and similar artists. In his article, Benjamin R. Levy addresses Ligeti’s handling and organisation of pitch and rhythm in two of his seminal works, the Requiem (1965) and Lux Aeterna (1966); with the primary motive, it seems, to address – and, in most cases, to prove – Ligeti’s claim that his compositions were “governed by rules as strict as Palestrina’s” (Ligeti, 1983).

There are four soprano sections, four alto sections, four tenor sections and four bass sections. The piece may be sung by sixteen soloists or by a larger choir divided into sixteen sections. Both contain moments reminiscent of Lux aeterna's radiant haze, but also have sections where the text setting is clear and simple enough to make the words understood.
