Political ecology is a transdisciplinary research field addressing nature – society interrelations, often with a focus on contentions and struggles over land and natural resources.
It critiques the ways in which political, social and economic factors influence engagement with ecological systems and also seeks out ways of doing things that could offer greater justice. Political ecology now has emerges from a large and fragmented literature from several disciplines including geography, sociology, anthropology, ecology and biology (Brown and Purcell 2005).
