Ornithonyssus bacoti is also known as the tropical rat mite. This mite is an obligate intermittent, but not fastidious, blood feeder and is rarely found on animals unless feeding. These are relatively large mites, measuring 750 μm to 1 mm. Female mites are yellow-white to tan, but reddish-black if they have had a recent blood meal.
